Today I vistited the beach around 10:00 this morning. I met with Mrs. Zully Hemyer, Mr. Charlie Phinizy, and Roland A. Rodriguez and his co worker. The meeting was to discuss the future of the beach. After gaining a permit to make an extra evacuation route some of the beach will be dug up for a padding system of some sort. The beach that is dug up wil be placed 8 feet behind the powerpoles and create a burm. Our plan at the moment is to salvage as many of the plants we can and when the burm is placed to plant those plants on top where they can grow.

Yet another day at the beach
After Myself and Troop 914 returned from our trip to Dry Tortugas, we thought it would be a good idea to stop at the beach and weed more giving the scouts an hour of service and giving the beach some more attention. The weeding was very successful and the plants underneith where once again familar with sunlight. I thanked all the boy scouts and told them exactly what they did and why it's important, I am really pround of the work they helped put into it. However their is some bad news. Recently D.O.T as been permitted to placed thier extra roadway along side the beach. What this will do is mave a large amount of sand on top of the allready planted plants. At the present moment I have no idea what the action will be. If we move the plants they will have less chances to survive. If the plants are left they will will allmost deffenitly be destroyed. I am meeting with somone on thursday to discuss the plans. I will make another entry then about the updated project.

Planting is VERY successful!
I will once again try to make a good post concerning the forth planting.
Previous to writting this, I had written a post about the event when it was not save and was lost from the system due to internet problems.
Last Wensday, Myself, my brother, Mr. Jim Gahagen and SCoutmaster Roy Bogue. Planted several Seaoats on sea oats beach while doing so we weeded out many of the...weeds that where present on the beach. In the process of weeding all of us began to notice somthing benieth the large bushes we where removing. What we found was that in our eariler planting many seaoats where planted on the dunes where we had weeded before. With the new weeds in place this cover up most of old seaoats and prevented them from sunshine. However being the tough little plants they are they succeeded in surviving under neith all these other plants.
After the observation we contined to remove weeds and uncover the sea oats as well as planting several more in the favored locations. The little plants though cut of from sunlight and hidden under large bushes continued to survive and I am praying these plants will continue their survival more many years to come.
Thank you

Summer is Almost Over
After a very nice summer break, I returned to the beach this previous Sunday. I went with my family to inspect the beach and make sure all was doing well. Many of the Sea Oats where growing thanks to the rain and sunshine and many of the other plants from the first planting where doing well too. the Sea Oxeye where blooming. A new turtle nest was located and I plan to do a final work day on the beach in order to clean the beach, remove some dead plants and plant some more plants in their place. I have not set a date for this final work day but I will post the date when I find an appropriate day for the project.

Second Planting Day
May 3rd,4th, 5th 2007- I was once again informed that construction would cause us to do something different with the planting. This time the construction crew wanted to dump excess sand that they removed for the road. They wanted to dump the sand on the areas we where going to plant. Instead of postponing the planting date and letting the plants go to waste we did a very simple effective thing, We moved down the beach to areas where the plants would not be dumped upon and it worked great. We arrived at the beach around 8:00 and waited for the rest of the guys and the plants to show up. Soon most of the boy scouts where there and the plant fallowed soon after. The infant sea oats where really small. You could stick about four of them into a space on a muffin tray but that's completely of subject. Because of their size we dug holes about an inch deep and gently placed dirt around the plant to cover up the roots. Troop 588 and the Nature Conservancy where very helpful in the project and because of their assistance we where once again ahead of the time planned. We did another garbage pick-up on the beach as we did before and I was very surprised and pleased to see much less garbage on the beach than the previous time when we where hauling back rain tarps. Soon our lunch arrived and we ate before saying goodbye to some of the volunteers. Although some of our earlier plants are not doing so well due to the transition of planting, I believe the little sea oats that where planted should do very well and grow to the height which they are supposed to. It's just another chapter of my eagle project in action.
Moving the plants
April 19, 2007- After being informed that the construction of the road shoulder would interfere with or plants. We where advised to replant them farther from the road so that they could survive. We arrived at the beach with shovels in hand and with the assistance of some village workers we moved most of the plants back four feet from the power pole in order to insure safety. I was a little upset about the fact that we had to move all the plants we had just planted but seeing that it was the best choice for the plants I continued to move the plants to the necessary placement. Many of the sea ox eye daisy where in bloom after being established into the beach. We worked for four hours to replant the plants and and are still keeping an eye on them to see how they are adapting to the new position on the beach.
We also had to move some rare sea lavender which is pictured above.
